At the age of 11, Kauane Souza Gomes, a resident of Cidade de Deus, in Rio de Janeiro, stood out on the international Jiu-Jitsu scene by winning the gold medal in a championship held in Orlando, in the United States.
The young athlete’s career is marked not only by her achievements on the mat, but also by her determination and drive to overcome the financial challenges she faced to compete in an event of such magnitude.
This victory represents much more than just a medal; it is a symbol of hope and inspiration for her community and for young people throughout Brazil.
Beginning in Jiu-Jitsu and family support
Kauane began practicing Jiu-Jitsu at the age of 5, when her mother, Tainá Lúcia, decided to enroll her in a social project in the community, believing that the activity would help keep the girl busy and away from the negative influences of the streets.
Since then, Kauane fell in love with the sport and began training with dedication. Jiu-Jitsu soon became a central pillar in her and her family’s life, with her father, inspired by her, also beginning to practice the sport.
The discipline and determination that Kauane demonstrated from an early age are a reflection of the unconditional support of her parents, who always believed in their daughter’s potential.
The challenges of getting to Orlando
Participating in an international championship like the one in Orlando was not an easy task for Kauane and her family. With a total cost of more than R$6,000, the trip seemed like a distant dream for a humble family from Cidade de Deus.
However, Kauane’s determination and the support of her family were stronger than any financial obstacle.
To raise the necessary money, she and her mother resorted to a series of initiatives, such as selling candy and raffles, and even asking for help on public transportation and at events in the city, such as Madonna’s show in Copacabana.
This collective effort demonstrates the resilience and will to win that characterize Kauane’s trajectory.
The victory in Orlando and the impact on the community
At the end of July, all of Kauane’s effort and dedication were rewarded when she won the gold medal at the Jiu-Jitsu championship in Orlando.
This victory is especially significant because it not only reaffirms Kauane’s talent and skill in the sport, but also serves as an inspiration to other young people from Cidade de Deus and similar communities throughout Brazil.
Kauane’s story shows that, even in the face of adversity, it is possible to achieve great things with effort, determination and the support of the community.
Next challenges: Lisbon’s dream
Kauane’s journey is far from over. Now, she and her family are preparing for their next big challenge: the European Kids Championship, which will take place in Lisbon, Portugal, in 2024.
Just like in Orlando, the family faces financial challenges to make Kauane’s participation viable, but the young woman’s determination and the strength of her community continue to guide them towards their dream.
Regardless of the result, what Kauane has already achieved goes far beyond medals; she represents the hope and resilience of an entire community.
