On May 1st, World Labor Day is celebrated, a date that raises deep reflections on the reality of those who work daily.
This day was established in honor of the struggles of workers, who demanded better working conditions and a fairer working day. It is a date to celebrate, but also a time to question:
What, in fact, do we have to celebrate?
On this day, it is undeniable that we should praise the historic achievements of workers, such as the reduction of working hours and the implementation of labor laws that guarantee basic rights, such as paid vacations and retirement.
These victories were achieved thanks to the collective effort and resistance of workers over the decades. However, even with the advances, there are still challenges to be faced.
Globalization and the technological revolution brought new ways of working and professional demands, in addition to significant changes in the dynamics of the labor market.
The precariousness of work, informality, unemployment and wage inequality persist as structural problems in many countries.
The precariousness of work in the world
The precariousness of work is a reality that affects millions of people around the world. The phenomenon of “uberization” of work and the rise of temporary, outsourced jobs without solid employment ties compromise the financial security and job guarantees of many people.
Furthermore, technological advances put traditional jobs at risk as automation and artificial intelligence replace human roles.
Informality is also a growing concern. After all, it is estimated that approximately 2 billion people in the world work informally, without guaranteed labor and social security rights.
This situation generates insecurity and vulnerability, preventing access to benefits and a decent and stable income. And again I ask, what do we have to celebrate?
Unemployment knocking at the door of many
Another problem worth mentioning is unemployment. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the global economic crisis, raising the unemployment rate in several countries.
The lack of opportunities and the precariousness of the job market have challenged the dream of a dignified and productive life for millions of people.
Wage inequality is also a latent issue. The disparity between the income of workers and the profits of large corporations is stark.
In addition, the wage gap between men and women, as well as racial and gender discrimination, are still barriers to be overcome in the work environment.
Therefore, I see that on this World Labor Day, we have to reflect on the role that each one of us plays in building a more just and egalitarian society.
Employers, governments and workers must unite in favor of a more inclusive and equitable labor market, which values the human being behind the worker, providing dignified conditions in the work environment.
Education as a tool for better conditions
Education and professional qualification play a crucial role in preparing workers to face the challenges of the globalized and technological market.
Investing in training and skills development is vital to ensure that no one is left behind in the face of changes in the world of work.
Furthermore, it is necessary to rethink public policies, promoting the creation of jobs and the formalization of work, in order to ensure that more people have access to labor rights and benefits.
The promotion of equal pay and the fight against discrimination in the workplace are also flags that must be defended by all.
Finally, it is imperative that workers remain united, claiming their rights and fighting for improvements in working conditions. History shows us that union and solidarity are the key to conquering rights and social transformation.
On this May 1st, let’s celebrate workers’ conquests and struggles, but let’s not stop questioning what still needs to be done.
