Work and Purpose: How to Find Meaning and Satisfaction in Your Career

-

On Wednesday I wrote an article about Abmex in which I talked about the importance of finding purpose in what we do, which is one of the factors that motivated me to invest in the startup.

So many people came to me asking: Tiago, how can I find purpose in my work? How can I have satisfaction in my career?

I remember an old phrase that said: we can’t do everything we like, but we can like everything we do. And therein lies the principle of finding purpose in your profession.

So I made an article a little different today, more in the style of tips, showing how you can create strategies to find meaning and purpose in what you do.

Self knowledge

Knowing our values, interests and skills is essential to identify the type of work that will bring us satisfaction. This is key to finding purpose in what you do.

Investing time in self-knowledge, whether through personal reflections, conversations with friends and family or even consultations with specialists, can be an important step in this process.

Define goals and objectives

Having clear, tangible goals helps guide our career and keeps us focused on what really matters. By setting goals, it is possible to draw up an action plan to achieve them and thus find satisfaction in progress towards our purpose.

For example, let’s imagine that today you are not working on something that really sees a purpose, but you can start rebuilding your career in the area that you find that sense and then set goals to reach the position you want.

Develop skills and competencies

To find purpose at work, it’s critical to be constantly learning and developing. Investing in courses, workshops and other forms of training helps us to improve our skills and become more efficient and accomplished professionals.

Seek feedback and learn from experiences

Feedback from colleagues, supervisors and mentors is critical to our professional growth. By listening to and learning from others’ opinions, we can fine-tune our performance and find ways to get more job satisfaction.

I particularly think this is a very cool path, because when we learn from our mistakes and are praised for our successes, we invest more in our strengths and embrace less responsibilities where we have more difficulties.

Find a mentor or role model

Having someone with experience and knowledge to guide and inspire us can be extremely helpful in the search for career purpose. A mentor can offer valuable advice, share their experiences, and help you stay focused on what really matters.

Balancing work and personal life

Career satisfaction is also closely linked to work-life balance. Taking time to care for ourselves, spending time with our loved ones, and cultivating hobbies and interests outside of work helps us stay motivated and enthusiastic about what we do.

Cultivate resilience

Dealing with challenges and adversity is an inevitable part of any career. Learning to be resilient and face obstacles with determination and positivity allows us to find satisfaction and meaning in work, even in the most difficult times.

Engage in activities with social impact

Pursuing jobs or projects that contribute to the well-being of society can bring a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Engaging in activities with a social impact helps us feel that we are making a difference and that our work has greater meaning.

Be flexible and adaptable

The job market is constantly evolving and to find career satisfaction it is essential to be willing to adapt and embrace new opportunities.

Being flexible and open to change allows us to grow and evolve with the market, which increases the likelihood that we will find purpose and satisfaction in our work.

Establish Meaningful Connections

The support and camaraderie of co-workers and superiors can be critical to finding career satisfaction.

Cultivating positive, meaningful relationships in the workplace helps us feel part of a team and gives us the opportunity to share our accomplishments and challenges with others who understand and value our efforts.

As you can see, these are some attitudes that we are changing and shaping and that lead us to find purpose in our work. I hope it helped you!
