Why did I start practicing Jiu-Jitsu?

In many moments of our lives, we make choices that, even if they seem random at first glance, shape our character, our relationships and even our destiny.

And, without a doubt, the decision to start practicing Jiu-Jitsu was one of those transformative choices for me. Before entering the immersive world of levers and submissions, I, like many, saw Jiu-Jitsu as just a form of fighting.

A martial art like any other, where strength and aggression dictated the rules. What a fool I was! When taking the first step on the mat, I soon realized that I was entering a much deeper and more meaningful universe than just “fighting”.

An art that transcends struggle

Jiu-Jitsu is not just about dominating your opponent physically. It’s a battle of the mind, of strategy, where every move has a twitch, and a millisecond of hesitation can be the difference between winning and losing.

It’s a human chess game, where the body and mind work together in a complex dance of attack and defense. But, after all, why did I start practicing Jiu-Jitsu?

Self knowledge

Firstly, Jiu-Jitsu offers a unique window into self-knowledge. In the midst of a fight, you are faced with your fears, your limitations, your strengths and weaknesses. You learn to know yourself in a way that few activities provide.

How many times have I seen myself fighting against myself, against my own limits, more than against my opponent? And every time I overcame an obstacle, whether it was a complicated technique or a paralyzing fear, it was like I conquered a new part of myself.

Community

When you enter this world, you automatically become part of a global family. No matter where you go, if you meet someone who practices Jiu-Jitsu, there will be an instant bond.

It is a silent brotherhood, where respect and companionship are the pillars. On the mat, everyone is equal, regardless of their origin, social status or profession. And this feeling of belonging, of being part of something bigger, is invaluable.

Discipline and resilience

Nothing in Jiu-Jitsu is achieved easily. The belts, the victories, the mastery of a technique – everything requires dedication, effort and, above all, patience. Over time, this discipline and resilience infiltrates other aspects of life.

Challenges at work, personal problems, adversity – it all feels a little more manageable when you’re used to fighting for every inch on the mat.

Self-defense

Of course, I can’t ignore the practical aspect. We live in an uncertain world, and knowing I have the skills and confidence to defend myself in an adverse situation is comforting.

But Jiu-Jitsu taught me that avoiding conflicts and using intelligence is always the best way. And that was fundamental to my life!

Passion

Last but definitely not least, Jiu-Jitsu is pure passion. From the moment I felt the adrenaline of the first finish, I was hooked. It’s a healthy addiction, an obsession that feeds the soul and body.

So, when people ask me why I chose Jiu-Jitsu, the answer is simple: because of everything it taught me and what I still have to learn. In Jiu-Jitsu, the journey never ends – and that’s exactly what makes it so fascinating.
