Living abroad is an enriching and challenging experience. There is a universe of possibilities that opens up when you decide to leave your comfort zone to settle in a new country.
However, the adventure is not without obstacles. Here, I share the main challenges I encountered and how I overcame them. Hope you like it!
The language barrier and culture shock
The first big challenge is the language barrier. Not knowing the local language can be discouraging. I myself didn’t have fluent English, and that was one of the biggest obstacles I faced when I arrived here.
To overcome them, I immersed myself in learning English, practicing with native speakers, and using translation apps until I felt comfortable communicating effectively.
Another obstacle is culture shock. Differences in social norms, etiquette, and even humor can cause misunderstandings. We usually don’t think about this point before moving abroad, but it is very important.
I learned the importance of observing, asking and reading about the new culture, keeping an open mind and adaptable to new ways of life.
Homesickness and bureaucracy
Longing is inevitable. Therefore, keeping in touch with family and friends through video calls and social networks helped to reduce the distance. Furthermore, creating a new support network abroad was essential to feeling at home again.
In addition to homesickness, the bureaucracy involved in obtaining visas, work and residence permits can be overwhelming. Organization and prior research were essential, as was seeking help from specialized consultants when necessary.
Living and employment costs
The cost of living can vary drastically from one country to another. So I created a detailed budget and looked for ways to save without compromising my quality of life. I also considered exchange rates.
Another point to consider is that finding work can be difficult, especially in highly competitive fields. So you must be prepared to work in professions that do not have a high status in the beginning.
I started as a waiter, but then I improved my qualifications, adapted my CV and over time I became an entrepreneur here on the Emerald Island.
Health and education system
Understanding and navigating the healthcare system is crucial as well. I made sure I had adequate health insurance and sought out information about how to access emergency and routine medical services.
For those with families, raising their children and adapting to their new environment are significant concerns. Involving the entire family in choosing the right school and extracurricular activities helps ensure a smooth transition for everyone.
Housing and social isolation
Finding a place to live that is safe, comfortable and within your budget can take time. So what did I do? I used online platforms, hired local real estate agents and sought recommendations from other expats.
Another no less important point is social isolation. I made an effort to go out, attended common interest groups and social events to meet new people and develop lasting friendships.
In the end, Ireland ended up being my home, and today I can no longer see myself living in any other country but here. And have you had any experience living abroad?
