End of affirmative action in the US? What I think about a possible US Supreme Court decision!

-

This June, the US Supreme Court will hear two actions that call for the end of the racial criterion in the admission of students to universities.

According to information published by Folha de São Paulo, some analysts believe that the measure will profoundly change the panorama of universities in the country. What I see with great concern.

The application was filed by the SFFA which stands for Students for Fair Admission against Harvard and North Carolina Universities.

Request to SFFA

The request presented by the entity aims to prohibit affirmative actions in these institutions. It is worth mentioning that the SFFA represents approximately 20,000 parents and students, having been founded by Edward Blum.

For those who don’t know, he is a conservative strategist known for his open opposition to affirmative action since the 1990s. Well then, but what is he accusing universities of?

According to the document, universities are being accused of discriminating against students of Asian descent and white students, thus favoring blacks, Hispanics and indigenous people. I don’t need to say how regrettable this request is.

However, the problem is not in the request itself, but in the current composition of the US Supreme Court. She currently has a very conservative background, which leads to believe that they will comply with the request.

Racial quotas are banned in the United States

To understand what can favor the decision of the supreme court, racial quotas are prohibited in the United States and this can favor the decision even more.

However, despite being prohibited, universities can develop their methods to create affirmative action for the admission of black and Hispanic students.

In view of what I pointed out, the decision of the American Supreme Court should consider affirmative actions in the country unconstitutional. So universities will be forced to choose other selection criteria to increase student diversity.

What do I think about it?

I see that decisions like that are regrettable. After all, it is more than crucial to have affirmative action to generate more equity and social equality.

As in Brazil, the United States also has social inequality that goes hand in hand with racial inequality. And without affirmative action, the country’s black and brown people remain on the margins of society.

I don’t see that actions like this hurt the constitution. This would happen if really equal opportunities were the same for everyone. And we are tired of knowing that they are not.

Therefore, I see this decision as a tremendous setback if it actually happens. As hope dies last, I still believe that the Supreme Court may not stop such institutions from promoting these affirmative actions.

Otherwise, it will once again be up to minorities to unite to try to show the world how they are treated. Apparently, the land of Uncle Sam quickly forgot what happened to George Floyd 03 years ago.
