Affirmative action has been the subject of heated discussions in recent years, and I strongly believe in the positive impact it has on our society.
As someone who closely observes social inequalities and their effects, I realize that these measures are essential to correct a history of exclusion and inequality.
After all, when well implemented, they can change trajectories, open doors and transform lives. And that is precisely why I support these policies.
The origin of affirmative action and its importance
Affirmative action did not come out of nowhere. It is a necessary response to centuries of historical injustices, which perpetuated the marginalization of certain groups.
In Brazil, as in many other countries, we have a long history of structural racism, gender inequality and discrimination against minorities.
Inclusion policies were created to try to reverse this logic, ensuring that individuals from underrepresented groups can access opportunities that would otherwise be denied to them.
When we look at universities, for example, the impact is clear. Increasing diversity in higher education not only brings new perspectives, but also creates a richer and more inclusive learning environment.
Actions such as racial and social quotas create space for talented but under-resourced young people to reach their potential. This goes beyond “compensating” for the lack of previous opportunities – it is about ensuring a more just and balanced society.
Affirmative action in the job market
The impact of affirmative action is not limited to the academic environment. In the job market, these policies have the power to promote equity and inclusion of individuals who have historically been left out.
Companies that adopt affirmative action practices gain more than diversity in numbers. They achieve more creative, engaged and productive teams.
After all, when people feel they have a real chance to grow and belong, they give their best.
In my experience as an entrepreneur, I see how important it is to support and promote these policies. Diversity, when promoted and respected, makes all the difference to the growth of any organization.
Not only because it is socially fair, but because diverse companies reflect society as a whole and become more innovative and capable of dealing with different challenges.
Affirmative action for a more just society
Affirmative action also contributes to something even greater: building a more egalitarian society. We all have a responsibility to recognize that there are profound disparities that need to be corrected.
These policies are not a form of “please”, as some still claim, but rather a form of social justice. I believe that they help reduce inequality and provide advancement for historically oppressed groups.
I am in favor of affirmative action because I believe that it creates opportunities that can change the course of many people’s lives.
For me, it is essential that we continue to support these policies, improving and expanding their application. Only then will we be able to move towards a truly inclusive and equitable society.
And that is exactly why we need to continue fighting for affirmative action to exist and evolve, ensuring a better future for everyone.
