Environmental concern: an urgency within companies

-

The world is watching the 27th United Nations Climate Conference (COP27) taking place in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

In the debate, all countries are concerned about the emission of carbon gas into the atmosphere, which raises the planet’s temperature.

What is being discussed are ways to minimise this impact. I see that besides governments, companies also have a central role in this reduction.

After all, in a certain way, industrial production contributes to environmental degradation. And although much progress has been made, there is a long way to go.

An urgent concern

The concern with the environment is increasingly urgent in the world scenario, since it is more and more difficult to meet the goal of raising the planet’s temperature by only 1.5º by 2100.

If it continues at the current pace, the expectation is that we will have a warming close to 2.8º until the end of this century, which may compromise the life of future generations.

On the part of companies, I see that a lot can be done. The main one is to evaluate the impacts of the whole production, as well as the productive chain on the planet’s sustainability.

Another point is to leave profit aside and focus on the production of more durable goods, since there will be less disposal and less waste.

Measuring carbon emissions

Organisations also need to pay attention to carbon and greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. There are companies that emit more and others that emit less.

The important thing is to make the measurement of this emission based on inventories using conventional tools. This is an essential step.

After all, this is where you will find out which are the emission sources, collect data, apply calculations and identify which path should be taken: emission reduction or neutralisation.

How is carbon neutralisation?

If the company is not able to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, it can neutralise the carbon emitted by buying carbon credits from other organisations.

One carbon credit corresponds to one tonne of carbon equivalent (CO2e). Companies that sell these credits can obtain them in various ways.

One is by capturing biogas from a landfill and turning it into energy, another is by preserving native forests, as these trees emit oxygen and capture carbon gas from the atmosphere.

By generating this carbon credit through the use of clean energy, this company can sell it to another that cannot reduce its emissions to neutralise what was emitted.

Therefore, there is no excuse for not creating actions that collaborate with the sustainability of the planet, leaving a better world for our children and grandchildren.
